Hoej vs. Mogwai
Hoej is running two very edgy decks that have a distinct purpose each. The Red-Black one has 42 cards featuring Disciple of Nevermore (x2) The Oath (x2) and Legion Standard Bearer (x2). This is enough of a tell that the deck was designed to work around different buffs and apply pressure.
The Green-Red ramp deck includes the full late game business package in the form of Time of Triumph (ToT) (3x) and Emissary of the Quorum (EofQ) (3x). It’s also packed with Stars Aligned (3x) and Selemene's Favor which in combinations with Treant Protector’s Signature cards provide the maximum ramp potential the Green color has.
Mogwai’s Black-Blue opening deck features very greedy items list with double Vesture of the Tyrant and a single Horn of the Alpha. He plans to facilitate those items with Payday (3x) Bounty Hunter’s Signature card and a copy of ...And One For Me. In combination with a variety of control cards the deck looks pretty sharp but relies on early track kills.
The second deck is Black-Red it's very similar to the first. Mogwai kept Bounty Hunter and Payday but replaced the Blue fireworks with the Red creeps and ToT (x2)
While Mogwai’s line-up looks very promising, it relies on early Track pickoffs and needs high rolls to start working. We are favoring Hoej in this matchup because his decks are more reliable and he is a more accomplished player as of today.
Hoej (2) > Mogwai (0)
Naiman vs. TenShi
Naiman also brought the Tycoon archetype deck with double Vesture of the Tyrant and a Horn of the Alpha, facilitated by Payday/Track in a Black-Red deck. To get better control of the board also he brings double Enough Magic!. The other Red-Green ramp deck sports Mist of Avernus (x3), and the late game behemoths: ToT (x3) & EotQ (x2).
His opponent TenShi uses a very mana-balanced Mono-Red with tho copies of Smash Their Defenses!, a Marrowfell Brawler and three ToTs. It’s the second Mono-Red we are going to see today. The other Red-Green deck is almost identical to Naiman's, so we have a high chance to see a mirror matchup.
Again, we have to favor the more experienced player Naiman, although TenShi's Mono-Red looks very promising.
Naiman (2) > TenShi (1)
Predictions for the rest of the group
Hoej (2) > Naiman (1)
Mogwai (2) > TenShi (1)
Naiman (2) < Mogwai (0)
