Scaling has been one of the significant changes in the Assassin’s Creed game franchise since Origins. Until the developers sent us to Ancient Egypt, the enemies had fewer difficulty levels, and even those didn’t matter too much since you could stealth-assassinate or smash one button for defense and eventually outlive the difficult foe in direct combat.
In Assassin’s Creed Origins we had up to 40 levels, and there was an option to have the opponents scale with Bayek. Odyssey took a slightly different approach and made the scaling mandatory, meaning that if you level up, the quests and the opponents around you level up as well. On normal difficulty, there is a soft scaling cap for each region which means that once you hit a certain level, the quests and enemies start growing slower.
Players weren’t happy about the system since it slowed the game, making it more difficult and less rewarding. Ubisoft has recently announced January update for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey with additional options to work around the scaling. Now as long as you don’t play with nightmare difficulty, you can choose how much the game scales, from heavy to light.
Ubisoft has raised the general level cap to 70 so players can turn scaling down, level up and enjoy thrashing the opponents left, right, and center.
