The blooming foliage protected the secluded trading stop from the midday heat. The travellers continued to dwell — all the paths into the depths of Nightsilver Woods lied through the clearing with the merchants' establishment. Cloaks and hoods did not mask enough some passengers' origins, but neither the dense merchant nor his thin companion experienced either fear or embarrassment. At least, did not show them.

Having seized the moment, both merchants bent over the counter: a strange blueprint and a chainmail shirt rested on a wooden stand. The lean one pulled out lamellar armour of amazing quality from under a wooden wagon. Bright glare, dancing on the metal folds of the reliable equipment, forced the merchant to cover his eyes with a sinewy hand.

"Everything is going according to plan," he told the obese comrade, "who are we expecting now?"

"Northern Protectorate," the big man replied and adjusted the fez, slipping on its side, "the land known for its unequal unions."

All glory and honour, wealth and fame in the annals always got to one military formation — the rest were served with crumbs from the "royal" table. And ahead of the laudatory odes of local generals' genius, rumours carried only a warning about their anger and rage.

The Chronicle of the Protectorate cherishes the commemorative scrolls, which contain information about the unconditional triumph of the detachment described. But history tends forward, nothing remains unchanged. Ancient wisdom says: Bad times give birth to strong people. Strong people create good times. And good times give birth to weak people. And weak people create bad times.

Generations have changed in the Northern Protectorate. And the struggle for leadership in the region acquires a fundamental character, and with every drop of blood spilt by its participants, it becomes fiercer. The upcoming Battle of the Ancients is a great chance to prove for those who are tired of huddling in someone's shadow.

The thin man sighed and began attaching the chainmail shirt to the lamellar armour according to the blueprint. He had plenty of time, the merchant was in no hurry, performing every action thoughtfully. He accompanied his work with a whisper, repeating strange names over and over again as if trying to memorize.
