The Uncharted movie's director, Dan Trachtenberg has revealed his plans regarding the upcoming movie adaptation. In an interview with GamesRadar, he said
“I didn't really feel like it was at all worthy of making a video game adaptation, [if] we're just gonna copy what the game is and just serve people a lesser experience than what they've experienced in such an incredible way.”
It's no secret that many video game movie adaptations fall short of the mark, at least so far as fans are concerned. Yet, this isn't just limited to video games. Anime, comic book and novel fans often have the same complaints when their favourite IPs move to the silver screen.
With this in mind, Trachtenberg hopes to avoid a similar situation by focusing his movie on aspects of Nathan Drake's life that haven't been touched upon in the games. It's hard for fans to complain about it if there isn't any source material to compare it to. However, he's chosen this path to give fans something new and unique to the film to experience, not as a way to avoid their displeasure. That's just an added bonus.
Trachtenberg came onboard the project early this year, replacing Shawn Levy that left to direct Free Guy. Tom Holland is still reported to be part of the project, but the movie has experienced many exits and setbacks since 2008. With Trachtenberg's debut movie being the successful 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016, Uncharted seems to be in very good hands.
The movie is set to release in December 2020, but the rest of the cast is still yet to be announced.
