The Super Smash Bros. online tournament series created to keep the competitive scene going during the coronavirus pandemic returned over the weekend with its first Major.

The Quarantine Series Major #1 began on May 2, bringing together 128 of the best players from all its previous events to compete for a $10,000 prize pool. With twice the pot of earlier events, the competition was fierce, assembling pros like Gavin "Tweek" Dempsey, Enrique "Maister" Hernández Solís, Spencer "BestNess" Garner, Kolawole "Kola" Aideyan, Leaonardo "MkLeo" Lopez Perez , Sonix, and Edgar "Sparg0" Valdez into the fray.

Unlike the Pound Online edition of the tournament series from the weekend before last, the first Major reverted to being just a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event. The tournament featured a single pool chock full of double-elimination matches and a couple of upsets.

Here are the top 8 standings for The Quarantine Series Major #1

  • 1. LGCY|Sonix

  • 2. T1|Leaonardo "MkLeo" Lopez Perez

  • 3. SSG|Enrique "Maister" Hernández Solís

  • 4. TSM|Gavin "Tweek" Dempsey

  • 5. XTR|Edgar "Sparg0" Valdez

  • 5. Armada|Spencer "BestNess" Garner

  • 7. Liquid|Samuel "Dabuz" Buzby

  • 7. OES|Brian "Benny&TheJets" Navarro

The Quarantine Series hasn't seen the same player take first place in more than one event yet, which just adds to the excitement. Meeting in the Winners Final, Sonix and his Sonic sent MkLeo to the Losers Bracket, where the latter defeated Maister to earn a rematch. Unfortunately for the PGRU #1 player, he did even worse than their last match, losing to Sonix, 3-1 in the Grand Finals.

Both finalists have stalked the top standings at every event. Still, while MkLeo's highest finish in the series before this was 8th in the Opening Invitational, Sonix has gradually improved his placings. In Minor Tournament #1, Sonix finished 7th alongside Brian "Cosmos" Kalu, the winner of Pound Online. In that event, Sonix took 5th place, and now his victory in Major #1

The champion walked away with $4,000, while MkLeo received $2,000, and Maister, $1,000. Tweek earned $800, both Sparg0 and BestNess got $500, while Dabuz and Benny&TheJets each received $200 each. The 9th-13th place players all took home $100.

The next event in the ongoing tournament series is The Quarantine Series Minor 2, which begins on May 16 and features a $5,000 prize pool.
