Following a two-year beta period, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of The People’s Republic of China has finally given Rocket League game approval. This will allow the game's developer Psyonix and its distributor, Tencent to monetize the game and build the Rocket League esports ecosystem in China. However, unlike in other regions, the game will be free-to-play for the Chinese market.
Rocket League China Open is a monthly tournament for teams in the Asian Region that is organised by Rocket League China and APL Esports. In 2018, Chinese esports organisations Edward Gaming and Royal Never Give-Up created Rocket League divisions and began competing in this tournament series, despite its low prize pool (¥4,500/$660).
With this new development however, the tournament scope and production is expected to grow, as well as the number of Chinese esports organisations that compete in the game. Rocket League will also be featured at the upcoming China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference (ChinaJoy) from August 2-5, in the hopes of attracting more players.
