Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti revealed during a press conference on March 24 that video game company Riot Games has donated $1.5 million towards coronavirus relief in the city.
The donation is a shared contribution between the company and its co-founders, Mark Merrill and Brandon Beck. Each provided one-third of the total amount, with $400,000 to be transferred to the LA Food Bank, $200,000 to the Mayor's Fund LA, and the remainder is going to non-profit organizations in Los Angeles.
We are blessed here in LA to have industries that not only fuel our city but our country and our world's economy. Gaming is one of those industries, and one of the leaders in that space is Riot Games. They're based right here in our city, and today that company and its founders are donating more than $800,000 to local nonprofits, including $ 200,000 to the Mayor's Fund to support whatever is needed for COVID-19 relief.
The Mayor's Fund LA will be used for childcare, health care, senior meals, and grants to both low-income and unemployed residents. Riot Games also released a statement of its own in which the company expressed its pleasure in being able to give back to the community that was instrumental in its current success.
Los Angeles has always been Riot's home, and Angelenos are an irreplaceable part of our success. We're proud to be able to give back to our community in this difficult time, and as a global company, we will also continue to evaluate how we can help battle this crisis on a global scale.
As of writing, Los Angeles has 670 coronavirus cases with 11 deaths from a total of 2,617 confirmed cases and 55 deaths in the State of California.
