After extensive discussions on the topic, the International Olympic Committee and other stakeholders finally decided to postpone the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020The IOC announced the change on March 24, but what does this mean for the tie-in event, Intel World Open?

Last week, ESL announced that the Intel World Open Online Qualifiers for Street Fighter V would be postponed from March 21 to May 2 due to health concerns regarding the coronavirus, COVID-19. This means the popular fighting game’s qualifier event now shares the same date as Rocket League’s Online Qualifiers. However, that announcement was made before the postponement of Tokyo 2020.

Intel World Open was widely publicized as a tie-in event for the 2020 Summer Olympics, with the big finale scheduled to take place on the first day of Tokyo 2020. Although the dates for the Intel World Open Finals haven’t changed from July 22-24, the date has lost a lot of the significance it had. The live qualifier event in Katowice, Poland, was also moved from June 18-21 to June 11-14.

According to a GINX TV report, an Intel spokesperson stated that although the company is keeping an eye on the situation as it evolves, Intel is still committed to making the event happen.

Intel Spokesperson

Due to the evolving global situation around COVID-19, we are currently looking into our Intel World Open plans. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as quickly as we can. Though we will have to make adjustments to ensure everyone’s safety, we are committed to bringing Intel World Open to life.

The decision to postpone Tokyo 2020 was the result of a conference call between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the heads of the IOC. The XXXII Olympiad will now take place no later than Summer 2021 and no sooner than January of the same year. It will also maintain the name, Olympic, and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community.

Intel World Open features a total prize pool of $500,000 shared between both Street Fighter V and Rocket League
