According to Bloomberg, AT&T is going to become the founding sponsor of a new mobile esports league organized by ESL. The league called ESL Mobile Open will hold tournaments in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile, Clash of Clans and Asphalt 9: Legends. In the first year of the league, ESL is planning to spend $330,000 on the tournament prizepools
Unlike the “traditional” esports games, the mobile competitive tournaments will be able to attract casual players, who engage in games via phones and tablets, which are cheaper and more accessible than consoles and power PCs. For the price of $350, you can get a current generation iPad with the optimal combination of computing power and form-factor to be a perfect fit for competitive gaming.
The choice of games made by ESL also makes sense. PUBG is a great mobile game (arguably even better than the PC version). Asphalt is the most popular racing game on mobile. Clash of Clans never struck a chord with me as an esports game since you need to spend an obscene amount of time or money to get a competitive set of cards, though in the core it’s an excellent strategy game on a touchpad.
The list of games may not be finalized, as the ESL management admitted that they are going to be doing a lot of experimenting.
