As stated by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are unsatisfied with the developers introducing microtransactions to the games on their platforms and soon intend to review their policy towards in-game purchases. The Great Three will require developers and publishers to submit detailed statistics on certain item drop rates so that the potential loot box buyer would understand his chances and the acquisition's profit.
The change will affect only new games and future updates that introduce appropriate adjustments to the monetization system. For example, Activision is not required to provide information about the Black Ops 4 “boxes”, but will have to share the info on Modern Warfare store.
It is likely that such a policy will lead to a complete rejection of cosmetic items. Epic Games have similarly transformed Fortnite in January this year and soon plan to apply the same method to the Rocket League.
