Backwards compatibility was one of the coolest features available on Xbox One. In short, it simply allowed to launch the best titles released on previous generations of Microsoft’s consoles on the current one. Sadly, the time has come to say goodbye to this feature.
Microsoft has officially announced that there won’t be any more new backwards compatible titles from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 for Xbox One. The main reason behind the termination of the feature is quite simple – the company has shifted its focus towards Project Scarlett. Funnily, the next generation of Xbox is going to support video games from across all four generations, which means that backwards compatibility will make a comeback – but on a significantly larger scale.
“We’re taking our work a step further and announced this week that thousands of games from all four generations will be playable on Project Scarlett. As such, we have now shifted our focus to help make the games you love playing on Xbox One compatible with future Xbox hardware. After this week, we have no plans to add additional Original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles to the catalogue on Xbox One, but we’re excited to continue our work on Xbox compatibility across platforms and devices, which remains a top priority.”
The full statement on the matter is available at Xbox Blog. There you can also find the final batch of games that are going to enrich the backwards compatibility library for the last time.
