Wings Gaming are the third and final invite to ESL One Genting 2016, ESL announced on Thursday. They will join the previous invitees Fnatic, Digital Chaos and five other teams that have yet to qualify in Kuala Lumpur.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise as four direct invites were expected and previously reported for the event, though a specific number of direct invites weren't mentioned in previous ESL announcements.

Additionally, ESL stated in the initial announcement for the tournament that they would feature "a dedicated spot for a local, Malaysian team." Of the current invites, only Fnatic would fit the bill, as Chai "Mushi" Yee Fung and Chong Xin "Ohaiyo" Khoo are staples in the Malaysian Dota scene, while neither Wings nor DC field a Malaysian player.

However, an argument could be made that the "Malaysian slot" should go to another team as a majority of Fnatic's roster are not of Malaysian decent. Marc Polo "Raven" Luis Fausto and Nico "eyyou" Barcelon hail from the Philippines, while Jimmy "DeMoN" Ho is an American of Filipino descent.

ESL One Genting 2016 features a $250,000 prize pool and will take place on Jan. 6-8 at Resort World Genting in Malaysia’s Highlands. Further details on the remaining five slots into ESL One Genting are expecting in the coming weeks.
