British University of Surrey recently conducted a research that determines correlation between video games and future profession students pick. They published the study in the journal Computers in Human Behavior that among other information also found that 100% of the girls who already were studying science, math or technology identified as gamers, which is quite unexpected. But what’s interesting is that young girls are specifically fond of STEM disciplines. Survey of male students demonstrated lower results, plus percentage of gamers had actually nothing to do with the fields male students picked to learn.
The experiment also showed that majority of teenage girls who love playing video games 9+ hours a week are more likely to go into STEM degrees. Gamer girl groups tend to have three times more of those who love STEM than among the girls of the same age who prefer other hobbies.
The researchers assume that results of this experiment will help teenagers to decide what profession to choose and educational establishments to find the potential “tech people” they need. That said, we need to remember that in the UK amount of girls who stick to STEM disciplines still remain exceptionally low, despite recent growth we’ve witnessed these last years.
