Serge Hascoet explained why some games are shelved despite developers’ will to produce them

Ubisoft Chief Creative Officer Serge Hascoet gave an interview to gameinformer and discussed the status of Splinter Cell as well as other games that haven’t been continued for a long time.

Here is what Hascoet said about Splinter Cell (last released in 2013) and Prince of Persia (last released in 2010):

I love Splinter Cell. I love Prince of Persia. I can't disclose any information at this time, but I can say we are fighting for resources. It's not a question of will, it's a question of means.

Unfortunately, he didn’t explain what kind of “means” the publisher lacks. Sure, Ubisoft is a huge company but it seems like other projects have been sucking the funding and management focus away. Perhaps, if AC: Odyssey fails in retail, the company will turn to other titles that used to be popular.

Ubisoft CCO confirmed that his company isn’t working on a Battle Royale game, but they want to learn what made the genre so successful:

It's important to understand why games like Fortnite are so successful, but it's not so we can copy it. It's to do something else, but with the same disruptive approach. So, we have plenty of ideas. We are testing a lot of ideas internally, and maybe only one will go to market.

One of the problems with online games is that after the release the team gets very exhausted and becomes slow to respond to demands from users. Hascoet mentioned that Ubisoft’s management is trying to change the workload to make the daily operations more balanced.

Hascoet discussed Assassin’s Creed series quite a bit. He declined that Ubisoft plans to release a new AC game annually, at least not if it would cut into the quality.

The interview touches on many interesting topics and is highly recommended to read in full. You can find it here.
