Conventional sports teams have faced the need to fully embrace Esports and we keep seeing more new alliances that didn’t make sense before. Hockey team Toronto Maple Leafs recently announced an event called “Leafs Game Day” that will be held on 21 October and feature NHL 19 (the video game) and Fortnite.
Participants of the event will be able to meet Maple Leafs members and play Fortnite against FaZe Clan. Sports club hopes to use Leafs Game Day as a promotional stage for NHL 19 Esports Leafs Gaming League with its own ladder and offline finals that will be held in January.
The top 8 teams of the league as of October 18 will be invited for a mini-tournament during Leafs Game Day with a $5000 prize pool.
Members of FaZe Clan will be joining Leafs Game Day attendees and NHL Hockey players for friendly squad games. It’s not clear whether FaZe players will attend the venue, or if they will be playing from the team house.
NHL doesn’t have a considerable footnote in modern Esports as there’s virtually no sponsorship in the game. According to Esports Insider, there are plans to establish big esports NHL leagues with the support from EA game publisher and other big partners.
