The Witcher 3 is one of those games where every single weapon and armor has a purpose. That's why if you can't have a straight answer which one is the best because all of them are useful under certain conditions. If we have to summarize the situation, the gear you would want depends entirely on your playstyle. For example, if you really like to use your signs a lot, the best gear for you will be the one which buffs them the most. 

Having said that, each gear has four different variations that you can have - Basic, Enhanced, Superior, and Mastercrafted. You have to be a higher level in order to have the best variation of your desired set.  

Now, let's see each of the most popular sets and what they excel the most at.

The Witcher 3 - Griffin School Gear

The Griffin School Gear is what you need to aim for if you like using your signs a lot. It will boost your magical damage significantly, which is very good for certain situations, especially if you are fighting against multiple enemies at once. However, it is important to note that you will not have that much protection compared to some of the other sets in the game. 

As the saying goes, "the best defense is a good offence". Just try it out and see if you like it. Most of the players prefer to rely more on physical damage and protection though, so keep it in mind.

The Witcher 3 -  Feline School Gear

This is the perfect gear of choice if you are not that tanky type of a player. What this means is that this gear has pretty good all-around stats that allow moving swiftly during battles, thus, making it possible to dodge your enemies' attacks. In addition, you get a very decent stamina recovery, which results in more frequent use of your signs. Having said that, their damage will be nowhere as close as if you had the Griffin School gear but nevertheless, you can make up for it by using them more often.

Oh, this is also one of the prettiest gear sets available right now, which is another big plus.

The Witcher 3 - Ursine School Gear

If you are one of those "Yolo" players who want maximum protection and physical damage output, this is definitely your number one option. The Ursine School Gear (a.k.a Bear set) is known for its insanely high protection and buffs towards your sword's damage. On the contrary, this is definitely not the right set if you want to use lots of your signs. After all, the stamina regeneration here is little to nothing.

The Witcher 3 - Assassin's Armor Set

This set can work wonders during the early stages of the game because it provides a lot of offensive stats. In fact, the gauntlets actually give one of the best critical strike bonuses in the game right now. It is definitely worth keeping this item even when you progress further in the game because they can be priceless in certain situations.

The Witcher 3 - Hen Gaidth Armor Set

A little disclaimer is needed here - you can only get this set if you happen to have the Blood of Wine expansions. 

If you are looking for a defensive type of armor, this is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make. You will be able to get as much as a 40% damage reduction when you get the entire thing, which is just insane in comparison to the rest. On the downside, it doesn't really provide all that much offensive capabilities. Sure, you will be able to tank more that is pretty much it.

In order to get your hands on this set, look out for a quest called "What Lies Unseen".

The Witcher 3 - Kaer Morhen Armor

The Kaer Morhen is the first set that you actually have once you start playing the game. Having said that, many players think that is not good at all, which is why they rush to find something else. In reality, this leather set offers pretty decent protection against most types of damage. However, in order for it to stay relevant, you need to upgrade it in a timely manner. If you don't, it will easily be surpassed by the other sets which you can get while playing. 

Kaer Morhen also has one of the most classy looks, which is a big plus.

The Witcher 3 - Manticore School Armor Set

The Manticore Set is very useful because it provides you with very good stats in every aspect, as well as a pretty valuable effect. That's why many players tend to use the Manticore armor until they get something which is worth swapping for. Usually, this is one of the first sets mentioned in this article because they are more specialized towards a certain playstyle.

The Witcher 3 - Viper School Armor set

This set is one of the best looking ones in the game, which makes it a very popular choice. In fact, it looks very similar to Geralt's starting items but unlike them, you can get some pretty good stats and bonuses here. For instance, in addition to your regular attack, you also inflict poison damage, which can work wonders in the long fights against hard opponents.

In order to grab this set, you need to have the Hearts of Stone expansion and a diagram from each piece of the set. Sure, it is a lot of work but the end result is definitely worth it.

The Witcher 3  - Aerondight Sword

After looking at the different armor sets, it's time to focus on the more interesting part -the weapons. There are not really too many wrong choices when it comes down to weapons. Nearly all of them have something which they excel at but there are just a couple that stands out.

The first one is called Aerondight and it is an elite weapon which is only obtainable if you have the Blood and Wine expansion. If you do, the next step is to take a quest which goes by the name "There Can Only be One". It consists of the following mini-quests that you need to complete:

• Father Knows Worst - you need to save two brothers from a collapsing house
• Til Death do You Part  - you have to make a judgment in a dispute between the two ghosts which will appear at the end of the quest
• Big Game Hunter - this is is probably the most interesting quest here because you will get the chance to watch a pretty cool exhibition. In order to do so, just askt he guard about the Count's life.
• The lat quest is called Feet as Cold as Ice. Here, you will engage in a conversation with the Knight there. When having the chance to respond, click on the "take the damn head" option and you will be good to go.

When you are done with all the quests, go back to the hermit and return it. However, be prepared because you will have to go head to head with a giant Cyclops that will appear.  He is kind of difficult to deal with but if you should be able to bring him down without too much hassle.

The Witcher 3 -  Gesheft Silver Sword

As you know, the silver swords in The Witcher 3 are mostly used against the non-human type of enemies because they deal more damage. In the case of Gesheft, this is 100% true.

This amazing sword is obtainable only if you have the Blood and Wine expansion for the game. If you already purchased it, the next step is to grab the diagram and craft the sword. Keep it in mind that in order to be able to actually wear this sword, you need to be at least level 45. You will still be able to craft it if you are a lower level but this means that you need to wait before you can use it.

In order to get the diagram, head over to northeast Beauclair where you need to look for a Monster Den. Once you find it, continue straight and just a couple of seconds later you will see a small campfire with a couple of enemies there. Take them out and just open the chest which contains the needed diagram.

The Witcher 3  - Vitis Steel Sword & Toussaint Armor

The last sword on this list goes hand to hand with its own armor set, which makes it a very lucrative choice. Having said that, many people tend to either ignore it or miss it completely because you can only obtain it while you are doing the "Night of the Long Fang" quest, which is one of the hardest ones in the game right now.

Before you start your hunt, make sure to have the Wine DLC expansion first because this is the only way to have a chance at getting these items. If you checked this out, take the quest and choose the option which allows you to follow Syanna. She will take you near a small tower made out of stones. Once you see the place, go to the small lake which you'll find right next to it and you will see the body of a dead soldier. This is where you get your items - just proceed to loot the Toussaint Armor and the Vitis steel Sword from him.
