When it was first announced that the Switch would be getting a The Witcher 3 port, many were skeptical. It turns out those fears were unwarranted.
Speaking to Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red senior producer, Piotr Chrzanowski explained how the port was made to look and run so well in about 12 months. "When it comes to expectations we wanted to really bring the same experience. So our goal was to bring the same game: not to cut anything, not to change things unless you really have to," said Chrzanowski.
He makes it quite clear that most of the development was done by Saber Interactive while CDPR mainly focused on guidance. In what sounds like a miracle, the game with all its DLC has been made to fit a 32gb card without any cuts to gameplay.
Most of the work done to achieve this feat involved memory optimisation since the Switch has little in comparison to other platforms. As the game became more stable, Saber Interactive began to add other features, like ambient occlusion. No new assets were built either, as existing ones were compressed a bit instead.
Maps and locations are unchanged but cutscenes have been reduced to 720p. Crookback Bog and Novigrad Market were two sections that proved difficult to get right as well, yet development seems to be moving rather well.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was one of the best games released in 2015 and it's great that Switch owners will be able to experience the same game on the go and at home. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition will be released on October 15.
