The unexpected fame hits hard, but when the popularity – along with the money you’ve been making – is taken away from you, it hits you even harder. It’s not a simple task to bring your life back on tracks after that, and the story of a particular Japanese player proves it’s sometimes impossible.

Tomoyuki “Katsuninken” Inu has once won the Dead or Alive tournament and got $15,000 for his plays. He got instantly infatuated over the idea he could receive that much money for just playing a game. Unfortunately, he ran out of his prize pool pretty fast, but the lust for money didn’t go anywhere. Dead or Alive was abandoned as an esports discipline shortly afterwards, so the player had to come up with a different plan. Back in February, he was caught by the local police while he was trying to rob an old woman’s house. While being interrogated, he said he’d been robbing and stealing for quite some time. He’s been doing that for an understandable reason – to easily get huge sums of money, just like he did in the tournament. His appetites for fancy living cost him a fortune, and all he was left to do was to start being a criminal.

He actually stole close to $25,000 from the old lady, and it could’ve been a tangibly better deal for him – if only he wouldn’t have been caught. Now, try to imagine your favourite esports player doing the same.
