Dota 2 has many interesting heroes that you can choose from, and each of them is unique in its own way. Some are great at doing damage, whears others are just good at supporting.

However, today, we will take a look at a hero that can do both things. In fact, this hero is often considered to be one of the most annoying heroes in the entire game. Not only is he capable of dealing tons of damage, but he can also push towers very fast.

Let's take a look at Venomancer and see what can we expect from this hero.

Basic information about Venomancer

Venomancer is a ranged agility hero that can be played in every single position from one to four. However, in the vast majortiy of cases, the hero is played as a support. That said, there are many situations where you would want to have a mid Venomancer. After all, this hero can do some serious damage during team fights, not to mention his pushing capablities.

Genereally speaking, Venomancer is not picked that common, especially during the pro games. That's due to the fact that the hero is mostly considered to be a counter to some other heroes. Having said that, there was a meta before where people were picking him all the time.

Apart from a support and a mid laner, this hero works wonders in the offlane, especially when he is paired with other aggessive heroes such as Undying, Batrider, etc. Together, these two heroes are capable of bringing down the enemy safelane very easy.

Lastly, the carry Venomancer is not really something that you see all that often. Nevertheless, there are situations where it can work, but it has to be paired with spedific heroes. Even though Venomancer is an agility hero, he doesn't really buy agility items at all, so the item build is a little bit different.

Let's take a look at the different abilities that Venomancer has:

  • Venomous Gale is perhaps one of the most annoying spells in Dota 2. When used, Venomancer shoots a yellow/green substance that slows and deals damage over time. Even though the total damage is not that much, the slow is very strong and in most cases, it will lead to a kill, especially when there are other heroes around. However, this spell costs a little bit more mana than it should, which means that it can't be spammed that much, especially in the laning stage.
  • Poison Sting is a passive ability that allows Venomancer's ranged attacks, as well as his Wards, to deal damage per second and slow the enemy on each attack. What's more, each hit also reduces the HP regen by a certain percent. In other words, this is a very annoying Damave over time ability that has no cooldown and can be applied with regular attacks. Needless to say, it stacks very well with the Venomous Gale, as well as with every other spell.
  • Plague Ward is a unique ability that allows Venomancer to spawn wards that deal damage on each attack. Even though they are unable to move, they have a decent range and can do a significant amount of damage, especially when they are stacked. Unlike the other skills of Venomancer, this one has a very little cooldown, which means that it's easily spammable. This makes pushing towers a walk in the park, especially when these wards get to level 4. Apart from just normal damage from their attacks, the Plague Wards also do 50% of the Poison Sting damage, which means that once an enemy is hit, he is unable to use his Blink Dagger for example, until the damage over time effect is ready.
  • Last, but definitely not least, we have the big ultimate Poison Nova. This is a very interesting spell that basically damages everything that's around Venomancer whenever he uses it. However, unlike his other spells, this one deals tons of damage (125 DPS with an Aghanim's Scepter). In most cases, it is enough to kill most supports, especially if they are not on full HP. However, there is a little trick here. In order to kill an enemy, he has to have some other debuff that deals damage on him. In other words, Poison nova itself is not capable of killing anyone, even if he brings him to 1 HP.

Items and Counters

As we've mentioned before, Venomancer is not your typical hero in the sense that he doesn't buy regular Agility items. In most cases, his build will be relatively the same, despite the fact that he can be a carry, as well as support. Here are some of the most popular items that usually all Veno players buy:

  • Aghanim's Scepter is very popular because it allows his ultimate to do even more damage.
  • Glimmer's Cape is a trendy pick among support Venomancers.
  • Blink Dagger can work wonders, especially when you desperately need to cast your ult.
  • Spirit Vessel is usually picked when you want to guarantee that you will get a kill.

In terms of the hero that counter Venomancer, there are a couple of names that stand out. Generally speaking, every high-bursting hero in the game is capable of bringing down Veno very fast. That's due to the fact that he is very squishy, especially if he doesn't have any defensive items. So, heroes such as Zeus, Tinker, Skywrath, Lifestealer, etc. , are just a huge pain to deal with.
