ESPN, citing its own reliable sources close to the matter, has reported on the possibility of the Overwatch League 2019 grand finals being held in Philadelphia – the hometown of Philadelphia Fusion. Reportedly, the decision in regards to that was made a couple of weeks ago.
According to sources, this might actually indicate a measured shift from Activision Blizzard for its League. The thing is that the grand finals are expected to take place at the Wells Fargo Center owned by Comcast Spectacor. But two months ago, the sports/esports entertainment company announced its plans to build a huge arena, which will provide the usable space of 5.5 thousand square meters, in Philadelphia. So-called Fusion Arena, this new facility will be dedicated to esports and – more specifically – the Philadelphia Fusion team, which belongs to Comcast Spectacor and will make use of the new arena to play Overwatch next year. The company, being an official partner of Activision Blizzard, might actually lend its newest place to hold the matches of the League in the nearest future, which in turn will result in fewer expenses for the makers of Overwatch.
While the part of the article with predicting the possible use of Fusion Arena is sheer speculation, the information in regards to the Wells Fargo Center serving as the place to hold the grand finals this year is rather legit. There’s no official confirmation as of the time of writing, though.
