Team SoloMid bested 19 of the world's best Apex teams last weekend at the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational to win the lion's share of the tournament's $500,000 prize pool.
The back-to-back champions faced off against teams like Counter Logic Gaming, G2 Esports, Natus Vincere, NRG Esports and Virtus.pro. Yet, it was the unsigned Russian squad, Team 789 that topped the winners' bracket on Sunday. They made the perfect underdog story and would have had a happy ending had Na'Vi not pushed them down to second place in the standings.
MVP, one of the last-placed teams in the Finals, fought its way into relevance in round nine and Sentinels secured round ten. Eventually, TSM took the win in round 11 after defeating MVP and GamersOrigin in the final ring at Wetlands.
The finals took 11 rounds of intense battle due to its match point eligibility rule. Any team that reached a minimum of 50 points became "match point eligible," which meant that all they had to do was take first place in the next round. Na'Vi finished 2nd place and Wyvern 3rd, while 786 took 6th place and MVP 9th.
EA and Respawn Entertainment announced plans for more online and offline tournaments in the 2020 season. However, more information will be revealed sometime in the future.
