The biggest Super Smash Bros. grassroots tournament, Genesis 7, is back again, and this time it has received over 1,000 registrations for both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Melee.
Genesis 7 began as a Melee tournament, and it's great to see that it's still going strong, with 1,080 registrations for its Singles event as at writing. The Doubles tournament currently has 183 teams signed up.
As for Ultimate, they've got 1,645 registrations right now, with 249 teams signed up for the Doubles tournament. It's not as high as EVO Japan numbers with almost 3,000 participants, but it's still an impressive feat. The fact that both of these big events will be taking place at the same time with this many sign-ups is a testament to the popularity of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Late registration has ended, but "emergency registration" is still open until January 10.
Top tier players like Leonardo “MKLeo” Lopez, Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, Joseph “Mang0” Marquez, and Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey will be in attendance. MKLeo will have to defend his number one spot in what's already looking like a year of fierce competition.
Other games at the event include Super Street Fighter II Turbo, DDR Extreme, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Super Smash Bros. 64, Rivals of Aether, and Windjammers.
Genesis 7 will take place from January 24-26 at Oakland Convention Center and Paramount Theater, Oakland, California.
