Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has is confirmed for EVO Japan 2020. The game’s presence at the prestigious event was revealed at Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Challenge Cup grand finals. According to IGN, it will also headline the event.
BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, Samurai Shodown, Soul Calibur 6 and Tekken 7are the other games confirmed for the event. Surprisingly, Street Fighter V still hasn’t been announced yet, despite being a regular title at past EVO Japan events. Seven games were present at the inaugural event in 2018 and six in 2016, so we expect one or more titles could be added to the lineup.
EVO Japan is scheduled to take place from January 24-26, which also happens to be the same period Genesis 7 will be taking place. The Oakland, California event is considered the world’s most significant grassroots Smash tournament. Sharing the same date means that many players will have to make the tough decision of which to attend.
Esports professional, Kane Blueriver shared on Twitter that Smash currently has 1300 registrations out of 1653 in total for EVO Japan. Registration has been open since September 27, and Smash is just a new addition to the event. For it to gain so many entries such a short time is a clear indication of why it would be chosen to headline the event.
