The cult Streets of Rage franchise is coming back after decades the original trilogy concluded. So far, the fans have only been given a look at the announcement trailer, but we now finally have the very first gameplay teaser. Spoiler – the game looks excellent.
There’s just half a minute of footage, but it’s enough for the old school gamers to raise their expectations stellar high. We get to see the return of the iconic characters, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding, in action. They do show a few newly added moves and mechanics like the ones, which allow you to toss the opponents over between the characters to perform long-lasting impressive combinations. The visuals are a bit uncommon since Streets of Rage 4 took a more realistic yet cartoonish approach. To be honest, it’s a good thing that the developers didn’t go for nostalgic pixelated graphics. It’s 2019 after all, and even such a classic genre as beat ‘em up side-scroller should be renovated according to the current technological advances. Well, more or less.
Streets of Rage 4 is the result of collaboration between two studios – Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games. The game could’ve never seen the light of day, but the publisher DotEmu approached Sega with an offer to develop a sequel after it successfully renovated and remastered Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon’s Trap. Sega agreed as the developers proved to be no strangers to the old school genre.
