Chris Roberts might be a decent developer, but he's also proved to be a great businessman - judging by his recent progress with crowdfunding for Star Citizen. The game's budget has successfully reached and passed the $200.000.000 mark - a great deal for an AAA-game, not to mention independent development sponsored by gamers themselves.

As the Cloud Imperium Games' head states, the aforementioned sum "is the highest total for any project in the history of crowdfunding and is beyond anything" he could've imagined in his wildest dreams. Roberts also goes into fun details and curious statistics, like saying the game has backers among gamers from across the globe belonging to 171 different countries. You can view the rest in the official blog.

It is worth noting, that the new round of backing for the game was driven by the recent release of Alpha 3.3 with new exciting features. Roberts also adds, that the past six years of open development and engaging with the community were amazing. It is hard to believe after all these years, but Star Citizen was initially announced back in 2012 - and this was the time we believed the game is going to release in 2014. Ah, the sweet innocence.

Besides, Star Citizen is going free-to-play for a full week starting this Friday. So if you are willing to become the best pilot in the Galaxy, you can find more on the matter in our previous article.
