Censorship in games is increasing. Recently, fans' unpleasantness caused some female body's censor in Devil May Cry 5. Now it turned out that this was only a smaller part, and in the future, we will have a harsh reality, where there will be even less frank content in games.
The Wall Street Journal has organised its own investigation and thus found some interesting details of Sony’s upcoming policy regarding the censorship in games on their console. All because of the movement called #MeToo, started by harassed women, who claim to be oppressed on sexual grounds. As it turned out, the Japanese company wants to ensure in advance and avoid possible persecutions.
It is no secret that the Japanese themselves and their region are rather sensitive about the issues of nudity in games, often focusing on certain parts of the body of female characters. Now, the PlayStation 4 manufacturer began to fear that due to the development of Twitch and YouTube, such content spreads around the world at high speed, reaching regions where nudity can be judged negatively. Because of this, Sony is increasingly tightening control and censorship, tying the hands of developers.
As for the developers themselves, especially from Japan, they are extremely unhappy with the aforementioned Sony policy. In their opinion, games associated with light eroticism and beautiful girls added variety to Japanese games and made the market wider. Now, Sony almost does not support such projects, offering developers to look at other platforms.
Sony has so far failed to clearly define the rules of censorship, by the way. Sometimes the company instantly gives light to projects where there is a mass of erotic content, but after a few days, it withdraws the product and demands that many elements should be removed from the game. Small companies suffer from this not only in time schedules but also financially.
Sony representatives declined The Wall Street Journal to comment on the situation, saying only that the company is responsible to the players.
