With projects like Google Stadia and Xbox Scarlett and xCloud technology, PlayStation 5 seems too traditional for the next generation consoles.
Yes, it will have backward compatibility, cross-gen-play, an incredibly fast loading time, but nevertheless, it remains a piece of iron with an optical drive, offline play and exclusive projects. Nevertheless, the head of PlayStation, Jim Ryan, shared his thoughts that the next generation of consoles may be the last in the form in which everyone is used to seeing it.
In an interview with CNET, he answered the seemingly frivolous question, "Is this the last console?" in all seriousness:
I actually don't know. I've been around a while, and I sat there in 2012 and listened to all sorts of smart people tell me about mobile and that the PlayStation 4 was going to be the most terrible failure ever.
The logic was actually hard to fault. But we believed in that product then, we believe in this next generation product now. Who knows how it might evolve? Hybrid models between console and some sort of cloud model? Possibly that. I just don't know. And if I did know, I wouldn't tell you.
Unfortunately, Sony will not be present at E3 this year. But from the words of Ryan, we can conclude that the PlayStation team is more likely to adapt to the conditions than to surrender. Sony at least thinks about the future.
