Smash x Minecraft: Steve And Alex Join The Fight

What happens when you add two characters from arguably the world's most popular game into one of the most accessible fighting games on the planet? Well, you get Smash x Minecraft.

Following an announcement on the Nintendo of America Twitter page about an update on a new character for Smash, the Japanese company came through big time announcing that Alex and Steve from Minecraft will be joining the Smash Bros Ultimate roster. Prior to the announcement, there had been speculation about a number of possible new characters including Master Chief from Halo, but, we eventually saw the trailer which featured Mario in a dark room which was then broken into by Steve.

The trailer was absolute hype and the live chat was going crazy with the new announcement. It was so bad that the Twitter profile for Nintendo of America went down under the weight of the traffic. From the trailer, it is clear to see that the fighting styles of Steve and Alex would be quite different from what we are generally used to.

In a short presentation after the trailer, Super Smash Bros Ultimate creator Masahiro Sakurai explained the hoops his team had to jump through to enable the Minecraft crew to operate within the Smash Universe. He explained that while the graphics weren't much of a problem, it was a bit of a hassle to sort out their fight mechanics, and also all the stages had to be reworked to accommodate Minecraft blocks.

Sakurai also added that there would be some additional content and gameplay which he would explain in a showcase event that will take place this weekend. So, we can expect more news, but one thing is sure: Super Smash is about to get so much more fun!
