Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have had their hearts in their mouths for quite some time now as they've been waiting for any reliable news about the game's fifth DLC character.

Following the absence of a reveal at The Game Awards last year, fans had grudgingly put all their hopes in the first Nintendo Direct of the year. That was until Nintendo announced that it would be a Pokémon Direct

This news is disappointing to Smash fans because it means the information shared will focus on the Pokémon franchise. There is still the possibility that DLC fighter five will be revealed during the Direct, but that means it would be tied into Pokémon somehow.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate currently has a good number of characters from that franchise already, with the likes of Greninja, Jigglypuff, Pikachu, Pichu, and Pokémon Trainer. There are also others included in stage transitions, as summons and Spirits. Thus, the prospect is almost as underwhelming as no announcement at all.

It feels like the collective voices of fans made a wish; only they hadn't hashed out all the details, and now their genie has made a mockery of it. Many unhappy fans took to Twitter to criticize the company's decision and complain. Several memes have popped up too, which either show fan frustration or make fun of it.

Could Nintendo decide to change things up during the Direct? Sure, but that's very unlikely. Could they have another Direct in January? Also unlikely. From all indication, fans may have to wait until February for any news. The eShop has Challenger Pack 5 listed for a February 29 release, so there's still time for them to make the reveal. Maybe too much time.

Regarding the Pokémon Direct scheduled for January 9, we could finally be getting more news about Pokémon Sleep and Pokémon Home, which were announced back in May 2019.
