We’re only a few days away from the launch of Shenmue III, and Ys Net has released a launch trailer to get our blood pumping. It did the trick.
Its been 18 years since Shenmue II arrived, and fans will now finally be able to continue Ryo Hazuki’s journey after the man named Lan Di. Even though the first two games were commercial failures, they created a loyal following of fans who would continue to push for a sequel over a decade later. By 2015 when Shenmue III was finally announced, many had given up all hope, turning Yu Suzuki into something short of Santa Claus.
The game picks up where we left things in Shenmue II and based on what we see in the launch trailer, Ryo finally gets to meet Lan Di after the fateful day his father was murdered. The trailer introduces some old faces like Ren as if trying to get us to reminisce about the last game as we prepare for the next. It's a better-looking sequel that doesn’t even attempt to try to lose the atmosphere and quirkiness of the first two games, and that’s part of the game’s charm.
When Shenmue III’s Kickstarter campaign ended, it broke the record for the highest-funded video game on the platform at $6.33 million. Now, after four years and big controversy over its Epic Games Store exclusivity, Yu Suzuki will get to guide us through the next chapter of his multi-part epic. For a while now we’ve known that the story will not end with part three, but if the upcoming game sees some commercial success, we could be getting Shenmue IV in a couple of years.
Shenmue III comes to PlayStation 4 and PC (via the Epic Games Store) on November 19. The Shenmue I & II re-release is currently available for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
