Last Tuesday, Shanghai's government published a list of development plans for the city's competitive gaming industry, which are aimed at turning the metropolis into an esports capital over the next 3-5 years. A tough opponent to fight Qatar it is.

Shanghai has previously expressed its ambitions in this sphere. The first mention of the desire to support this trend can be found in the document on promoting the development of cultural and artistic life, dated December 2017.

The new statement says that a significant improvement of any esports-related content conditions is planned, as well as an increase in the coverage of major information channels in the media and increased support for the esports business. The authorities of Shanghai are keen to organise more major tournaments and expand their support for small-scale events, including competitions within educational institutions.

To provide venues for future sporting matches, the city administration obliged local companies to invest in the construction of stadiums capable of hosting tournaments of the highest level, like the League of Legends World Championship.

Earlier this year, Tencent made a deal with the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, which will now become the main host for all the company's events. We also recall that The International 2019 will be held on the territory of the local Mercedes-Benz Arena.
