Rumors indicate that Nvidia is gearing to release the new “mainstream” video card RTX 2060 which is supposed to replace the current fan favorite GTX 1060. The company is facing an unfortunate problem logical with the crash of the cryptocurrency market – the supply channels are filled with “old” GTX 1060 cards and there is no clear way to get rid of them.

During the Q3 financial call, the CEO of Nvidia mentioned that there is an oversupply of mid-range products that will take 2-3 quarters to “work through”. Such forecasts are always exaggerated to sound more positive and main cryptocurrencies since then were going nowhere but down.

Retailers might be the biggest losers in this equation

RTX 2060 might be sold at the $400 price tag which is where GTX 1060 was at its launch. The new Turing video card is reportedly 120% more powerful than its predecessor so the retailers will find it very hard to get rid of the older cards.

Nvidia could do a trick and skip 2050 for a very long time to allow GTX 1060 to keep the niche of the “cheap but quick” video cards. That would hold the demand for 1060, but cut the income of the video card company, who will have to kill one of the potentially profitable lines.

As far as gamers are concerned, price drops are only fair after the scrutiny we were going through during the cryptocurrency gold rush.
