The ESL One Los Angeles 2020 - China Online Championship ended yesterday after Royal Never Give Up dominated the Group Stage without losing a single match and went on to defeat both EHOME and Newbee in the Playoffs.
Newbee finished the Group Stage in third place, moving to the Playoffs in the Losers Round. Beating Vici Gaming in their first match, they went on to face EHOME, who were sent to the Losers by Royal Never Give Up. Following their second Playoffs victory, Newbee advanced to the Grand Finals, where they faced the soon-to-be champions, Royal Never Give Up.
The momentum Newbee had built to get here seemed to be sucked right out of them by Royal Never Give Up, who took the first two games. The second loss was hard-fought, but the third game rewarded Newbee’s hard work with a win. Unfortunately for Newbee, as their opponent’s name suggests, Royal Never Give Up did not relent, winning the fourth game and the online championship, 3:1. Royal Never Give Up walked away with the lion’s share of the $55,000 prize pool from the online event that ran from March 28 to April 5.
Since the tournament adopted an online format in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic, each region has held its championships online. Fnatic secured victory in Southeast Asia, while Evil Geniuses took North America and beastcoast won South America.
Beginning on April 4, the ESL One Los Angeles 2020 - Europe & CIS Online Championship is currently underway with the Grand Finals set for April 19.
