Mark Merrill opened up about details on what he’s currently working on with Riot Games

Riot Games is on the market for more than 10 years and during all this time the company only realeased a single game – League of Legends. Despite huge popularity of the MOBA and rank of the most profitable PC titles, the company plans to start working on other big projects.

Riot games co-founder Mark Merrill spoke to Variety and said that nine years of work on League of Legends is just a first step for the company and now they make the second step. They started preparing for it five years ago when the studio decided to expand the development team in order to find interesting and fun game concepts.

However, Merrill didn’t specify how many of the 2500 employees actually work on the new projects. But he discussed what company bases the development process on.

“We need to develop games that will resonate with a particular audience and focus on the gameplay first, then the IP needs to support that game”

According to Merrill, Riot Games’ next project will take its niche, just as LoL did.

“Like with ‘League of Legends’ we’re not going to try and please everyone or do things even oriented to a mass market. We think of ‘League of Legends’ as a niche market that’s really focused.”

Regardless of what’s said above, the studio doesn’t plan on limiting itself in choice of the platform to distribute on and considers all possible variants, while also planning to create a few “long playing” games.

“There are lots of games people buy and play on the app store, steam library, on consoles. That creates a lot of interesting questions and challenges, but we focus on what would be worth someone’s time. That’s the only type of game we want to create: games with longevity — that’s worth your time.”

Mark hopes that in five years player will no longer regard the studio only as “creators of League of Legends”. Apparently, during the time the company aims to release one of their still unannounced games.

It also seems that Merrill’s tweet in the end of July was posted on purpose. In the tweet he asked whether Riot should or should not start developing their own MMO. Of course, this is quite possible but Mark did not directly mention any specific project yet.

“The question that is really interesting and relevant is, ‘What does the future of MMOs look like?’ I think we have a view, others have a view, players have a view. ‘World of Warcraft’ continues to be a dominating game. There is a really good argument that going head-to-head with ‘WoW’ may not be the best move, but who knows. We’re exploring a lot of stuff, thinking about a lot of stuff.”

Surely, Riot Games is not going to forget about League of Legends. On the contrary, they’ll keep developing the game because the MOBA is the reason why Riot is one of the leaders in PC gaming industry.

“We have an obligation to our fans. If we were to divert our talent to other teams, we wouldn’t live up to that obligation. That’s why we grew the company.”
