It's been revealed in a Screenrant report that a new Resident Evil movie is in development by the director of 47 Meters Down, Johannes Roberts.

Earlier in January, rumours surfaced about a Resident Evil Netflix show, but there has since been no confirmation. There hasn't been any connection made between this movie and the Netflix show either, so for now it's safe to assume that they aren't related.

Roberts has had an interesting career, with many of his independent movies doing quite well, displaying a preference for horror and thriller flicks. His $5 million budget movie, "47 Meters Down" (2017) earned $65 million theatrically, 2010's thriller "f" was a critical hit in the UK, and "The Strangers: Prey at Night" (2018) entered the US box office behind Marvel’s Black Panther and Disney's Wrinkle in Time

After noticing his director's credit for the Resident Evil movie on IMDb, Screenrant approached him on the topic. “We are in active development of that [Resident Evil movie] at the moment. I pitched them a take, and they really loved it. So, we are just gearing up on that as we speak, really," said Roberts. "It’s gonna be super scary. It’s super, super scary. And it’s just getting back to the roots of the game. I think, at the moment, I’m not really allowed to say much more than that. But it’s gonna be a lot of fun,” he added.

The original Resident Evil games helped shape the survival horror genre, but just like it's movies, it began to put less emphasis on scares and more on thrills and action. Resident Evil 7, the most recent game in the franchise, however proved that the studio still knows how to make a good survival horror game and hopefully this movie delivers on the scares we've been promised as well.

The first Resident Evil movie was a lot closer to the source material, with each new one trying to outdo the last in effects and over-the-top action scenes. Roberts' direction for this reboot will surely be a treat for fans of the video game series.
