Building upon the work of Christoph Schied, a Ph.D. student at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, Nvidia began working on Quake II RTX. The 1997 classic would be fully remastered to take advantage of GeForce RTX graphics cards and other similar hardware.
On May 27, Nvidia posted the game's minimum system requirements on their website, together with the Windows and Linux release date of June 6. They are:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit or Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i3-3220, or AMD equivalent
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, or higher
Storage: 2GB available space
Additional Notes: Vulkan (from steam page)
The game displays the possibilities open to games that employ ray-tracing and is a marvel to behold. Other additions, to mention a few, include new weapon models & textures, new dynamic environments and updated effects with new sprites and particle animations.
The first 3 levels will be available for free but those that already own Quake II will be able to play the whole thing and also have access to online multiplayer. Those that don't own the original can purchase the complete remaster for $4.99.
For the modding community, the game's source code will be uploaded to github to allow them continue to build great mods for the remaster.
