Rocket League developers Psyonix have announced that the team, together with their publisher, Epic Games, are removing the loot boxes from the game. Crates have been a part of Rocket League since 2016 and were inspired by Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Players could earn boxes by playing the game, but they had to buy keys with real currency to open it.
Unlocking the crate gave the opportunity to earn rare and unique items, but the community uses the keys as a way to exchange them for items, instead of checking their luck by opening the box. Rocket League has created an economy, but the keys and boxes will be removed at the end of this year.
As the developers have stated:
Here at Psyonix, and Epic Games as a whole, we are dedicated to creating the best possible experience for our players all over the world.
In the coming months, a schedule with additional information about the new system is going to be published. The announcement can be compared with the removal of boxes with the same decision taken by Epic Games in Fortnite Save the World.
