MMO Albion Online went for a free-to-play model ⚡⚡⚡ Esports and gaming news, analytics, reviews on WePlay! The latest news on WePlay!

Sandbox Interactive has recently announced that Albion Online, its ambitious MMORPG set in a vast fantasy world, is adopting the free-to-play model. The decision was mostly driven by the sheer fact that most of the income was coming from the premium currency and accounts.

In other words, selling the game didn’t prove to be exceptionally profitable, but was rather considered a paywall that prevented many players from enjoying the otherwise great game. Nothing is going to differ in terms of providing paid premium accounts and currency – the only change is that you don’t have to pay for the game anymore. From now on, microtransactions are going to be the only source of income for the developers. It is worth noting that the free-to-play version of the game is the very same Albion Online – therefore there aren’t going to be any limitations regarding the in-game content and the ability to access it. For Sandbox Interactive, the change also means that the existing player base is going to grow significantly, which will likely lead to increased spending on premium options. All in all, moving to the free-to-play model is great for both developers and players.

The game has received a huge update along with replacing its distribution model. The patch includes various changes, fixes, and improvements. Since the list is quite long, we kindly recommend you to look at the patch notes in the latest official changelog.
