Marvel has signed a strategic partnership with NetEase, leading Chinese internet and online games services provider. The idea behind this collaboration is to create various entertainment projects based on the rich Marvel’s comic book library. Some stories will be adapted for the Chinese market, while the other will be used to create video games and TV series.
Now, there might be a lot to speculate about. The two companies haven’t announced anything specific, but in case NetEase plans to expand further to the West in terms of reaching new audiences apart from mobile gamers, the collaboration in question might relate to the recent investments in Quantic Dream and Bungie made by NetEase. With that in mind, there’s a chance we can see some huge video game titles. Bungie received $100 million from the Chinese company when the studio had parted ways with Activision. It was a nasty timing so to say, and the developers of Destiny couldn’t simply refuse to take the offer. A similar story happened to Quantic Dream; the studio was treated with an investment of unspecified scale by NetEase when it announced the shift towards multiplatform development.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that one or both studios will be involved in developing Marvel titles for NetEase, but the possibility is real. If you recall, Insomniac did great with Marvel’s intellectual property by developing wonderful Spider-Man, and the desire to go further in that direction might work out for both Marvel and NetEase.
