A real news bomb exploded in the Magic: The Gathering community. Yuuya Watanabe was disqualified due to marked cards. Important note that he is a member of the MTG hall of fame and 2012 world champion.
The incident occurred at the Mythic Championship 2 - a tournament with a half a million dollars prize fund, which was held in London. The judges found special markings on the significant cards during the deck check before the fifteenth round. The message from the administration of the tournament, which was announced on a live broadcast, says:
“The judgement staff determined that the odds of this happening by accident were close to non-existent, and disqualified Watanabe from the event. This infraction will be further investigated by the MPL.”
Playing marked cards is one of the most significant violations in Magic: The Gathering offline tournaments. Watanabe is considered one of the best players in the entire history of the game. The Japanese earned over four hundred thousand dollars in prize money for more than ten years of a professional career.
The same source noted that Yuuya Watanabe accepted judges decision and apologised for this case.
