Mogul, the Australian esports tournament platform has announced the Magic: The Gathering Arena Mogul Championship 2019. The tournament features over AU $50,000 ($33,753.50 USD) in prize money.
Registration is now open to residents of New Zealand and Australia, with the championship kicking off on October 7 and running till November 22. The tournament will make use of a defend ladder format, while playoffs will follow the initial head-to-head stage, leading up to the grand finals.
Mogul chief marketing officer, Mark Warburton said in a release: “Wizards of the Coast is a great addition to Mogul’s partner roster and we’re delighted to offer our innovative platform features to the championship. We look forward to developing more opportunities with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro as our platform continues to expand and delight players."
Magic: The Gathering Arena is still finding its legs as an esport, so tournaments such as this serve only to help spread the word and grow the scene. At this rate though, bigger events with a global reach shouldn't be far behind.
Wizards of the Coast regional marketing manager APAC, Wilkin Chan, also commented on the announcement: "We are thrilled to have Mogul as a partner as we continue to increase competitive play opportunities in Australia and New Zealand. This partnership with Mogul opens up new horizons of what we can offer our players and we hope our ANZ fans are as excited as we are about this additional way to engage with Magic: The Gathering Arena."
In an effort to expand into the Middle East, Mogul partnered with SARENA in August. In May, the organisation also announced that it had raised AU $3.1 million ($2,092, 717 USD) through its most recent share placement.
