Esports is charging into all spheres possible. ESPN starts collegial tournaments, universities grant specific degrees, Fernando Alonso builds his own emotorsports empire, the greatest football league of the world holds its FIFA tournament — how long should we wait for a TV-series about esportsmen on Netflix?
So, back to FIFA. On March, 29 the grand final of ePremier League took place in London. It was the battle of the dreams: Manchester United vs Liverpool. Long story short: after United's Kyle "KyleLeese_" Leese won the PS4 competition and the highest-ranked Xbox player in the world, Donovan "F2TekKz" Hunt representing Liverpool, won the Xbox One bracket, they've clashed in a derby for Liverpool mate to win the league.
Well, this tournament worked in a quite interesting way. At first, there are two brackets: PS4 and Xbox One — so no PC players. You could have registered (available only for her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's subjects) to become one of the participants through the official site. Besides, all the playoffs were held at real team's Premier League stadiums.
The 40 players who won their club's qualifiers competed at the Gfinity Arena, London. Twenty players on each console were divided into four groups of five players. The top two players advanced to the quarter-finals, where it became a knockout tournament.
The winners of both console competitions then faced off in the grand final to decide the overall champion, though there was no prize money on offer for this tournament.
Still, there is some profit in taking part in this competition. Players got some point to qualify for the FIFA eWorld Cup 2019, scheduled at the end of the year. It is the biggest event of the season, where a player can become the official world champion.
Funny thing — head of sales and marketing of Premier League Will Brass said that the future for ePremier League is unclear: "The honest answer is I don't know. What we're really focused on doing is creating the best competition we can for this iteration of the Premier League, and most importantly the best competition for the gamers and the fans."
