Beyond the Summit's Mainstage just concluded on September 22, where Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma proved his dominance in Super Smash Bros. Melee once more.
The Jigglypuff main fought his way into the Final Singles Bracket where he faced Zain Naghmi. Just like the last three Majors, their matchup lasted five exciting games. Hungrybox defeated him to face Jeffrey "Axe" Williamson in the Grand Finals.
Axe beat Zain 3-0 in the Losers Finals to catch Hungrybox in the final matchup. With such an impressive win, there was a glimmer of hope that Axe would be able to defeat the legend.
Axe had already lost to Hungrybox in the Winners Semi-finals 3-1, so the rematch was his opportunity to get some revenge. Unfortunately, Axe’s Pikachu was completely shut down, losing 3 stocks in the first game.
Known for being great at a variety of characters, Axe decided to change things up by choosing Jigglypuff counter, Young Link. However, Hungrybox outmaneuvered Axe and 2 stocked him in a dominant play. Now pushed to the edge, Axe made what might have been a mistake by choosing Falco, a character Hungrybox is very familiar with.
Using his knowledge of Axe’s character against him, Hungrybox defeated his opponent after taking 2 stocks, winning the Mainstage trophy.
This makes the Team Liquid player's 7th Super Smash Bros. Melee Major victory this year, four of which are for the current ranked season. This season he has placed in the top six in all Majors so far, and will most likely win the title of best Melee player for the third year in a row. His only opposition preventing him from the title are Axe and William "Leffen" Hjelte who will need to pull off some impressive plays to unseat Hungrybox.
