Traditionally, gaming and working out don’t go together very well. As years went by, we learned, that to be successful in gaming, just like in any other area of life, you need to be physically fit, otherwise the body literally stands in the way of progressing and enjoying life.

Professional players of the highest level tend to exercise with coaches provided by their own teams. But what about the rest of the gamers who don’t have a team to hire a dedicated training expert and are left to their own devices?

Most nerdy gamers get stuck with a collection of problems which includes the lack of motivation, not knowing what to do and where to start, lack of understanding why you really need to work out and so forth.

This weekend, I checked out and mostly skimmed through The Deadpan Diaries episodes — a talk show made by ThatBronzeGirl and iNcrontroL, who I recently had an interview with. The episode that caught my attention the most had the hosts and the guest talking about physical fitness and addressed many problems related to the topic.

Here are some key takeaways from this talk show/podcast episode:

— Working out makes you feel good. Not working out makes you feel bad. That’s how our bodies work.

— There is no specific universal workout formula. You need to find what suits you the best.

— You’ll get more out of your day by dedicating time to working out.

— Trivial things like walking for 45 minutes a day can have a tremendous impact.

The bare-bones roadmap of getting into better physical shape:

  • Try to do something (running, lifting, yoga, pushups, basketball, paintball etc.)
  • If you like it, get into a habit of doing it, if you don’t like it, try something else.
  • If you feel that what you do doesn’t work, you can also try to modify it — find a new gym to your home or work, change the time of day etc.

You can’t imagine how many things there are that you could be doing. You can probably find a sword fighting or archery class in the place where you live and dramatically improve your life by taking it.
