How to become a pro-player #3. Time management

Time to talk about managing your own time

Good day, friends. In our previous articles we talked about how important it is to be able to lose with dignity and common rules of teamplay. Yes, we slightly touched upon the time management subject in one of the articles but today I’d like to expand on this topic using my own experience.

Let’s use some Google powers and search for definition of the term to make it easier from now on:

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities - especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity. It is a meta-activity with the goal to maximize the overall benefit of a set of other activities within the boundary condition of a limited amount of time, as time itself cannot be managed because it is fixed.

It’s true, time is one of the most valuable resources so it’s never a bad thing to learn how to spend it. We have 24 hours a day. Let’s split them into 4 subpoints:

  •          Sleep time
  •          Essential needs
  •          Free time
  •          Work/school

Sleep time

There are many recommendations on how many hours a human being needs to sleep every day but in reality it usually takes 7-8. If you get used to it, you can get enough rest after 7 hours sleep.

With that, it’s very important to keep your sleeping schedule after holidays, school breaks, vacations, etc. I am pretty sure many people just said “Man, I’m a sleepyhead, spending at least 10 hours in bed”. Well, it depends on how well you treat yourself :)

Sure, if there are some medical precautions, then you don’t have to break the rule. We’re basically talking about a universal situation, ok?

So, sleep’s done and we have 17 whole hours!

Essential needs and other important stuff

Taking a shower, brushing your teeth, eating, getting to work/school and other everyday’s stuff takes time too. I don’t think there’s something to advise on (perhaps just taking a shower is better than taking a bath), you just need to calculate how much time you spend doing it all. Overall, it will be somewhere around two hours per day.

Doubt you can shorten the amount of time in any way. I’d just recommend combining useful activities. For instance, while getting to work/school you can read a book, listen to some podcast, watch a movie and so on; or answer your messages while eating.

Try to not save on things you like. If you usually get bright ideas while taking a shower, then don’t lay it off because you’d save several minutes.

Work/school

As far as work is concerned, in a perfect world you work remotely and can arrange your schedule any way you want. And it’s not that you’re lazy to go to the office. Your productivity is in question here. To be honest, only few people who work 8 hours a day spend more than 4 hours on the actual work (it mostly relates to people who work in offices). If you can build your work schedule up on your own, just calculate max amount of time you’d need to do all tasks and include it in our plan. If you manage to fit the entire process into 6 hours, you’ll have NINE HOURS OF FREE TIME A DAY!

However, if you have a work schedule to stick to, then you have several possible options:

  1. If you can pick, consider options closer to your house. If you rent your accommodation (as author of this particular article), rent it closer to the office. One or two hours a day will become much more important as the time flies by.
  2. If you need to be in one place for a certain amount of time but you do your tasks faster, think of useful stuff you can do in between. It can be other freelance work, all kinds of foreign language tests or learning various aspects of your free time.

Free time

Even with 8 hours of work, you still have about 7 hours left. Now you can’t escape memes, favorite videos and other things but you need to understand what you want to do, how you want to develop your personality. Every person sets their own goals and tasks in front of them but you have to strive for something, pursuit your dreams because moving forward is at last more captivating that staying in the same spot.

By the way, I would like to say this: based on my own experience, second monitor is never a bad thing. It will let you spend your time more effectively. You can watch a movie or TV show while doing something useful. Sooner or later, you’ll learn to receive information from two or more sources simultaneously. That will make you more flexible trying to face reality of the modern world.

Spend the rest of your time on something of importance. I believe everyone can easily figure out that stuff for themselves, so no advice here.

Spending your time

If you live with correct time management, any force majeure will seriously throw you off the schedule. An urgent trip, illness, discharge – these things happen eventually. Negative events are inevitable so spending your free time making backup plans is a solid time investment.

Think about what’s important for you right now and what might happen if you’d lose it. No-no, I am not saying you got to look for second girlfriend or organ donors. I am talking about your work, environment, relationships, etc. Once again, people have their own problems and issues so it’s a bit difficult to find and break down a specific yet universal case.

One might ask “Dude, what does it have to do with esports anyway?” The thing is many players whine they don’t have enough time because of their school/work/girlfriend/English classes/gym/*instert_anything_here*. I don’t want to burst your bubble but you can always find free time if you don’t need more than 24 hours per day. At least once try to make your perfect schedule where you optimize your day and live through the day minute by minute.

It’s going to be a bit tough but results won’t be a long time coming. Build your day properly and you will have enough time for everything! Hope, this article was helpful for you, let us know below ;)
