The Game Awards was created to be something like the Grammys of gaming, but some only look forward to the game announcements made at the event. This year, fans hoping for a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC fighter introduction were left disappointed.
Many of the aggrieved took their complaints to social media, and it was on Twitter that they got some insight from the show's host, Geoff Keighley. He also happens to be The Game Awards producer and creator, so who better to answer their question?
When asked why there was no Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character reveal, the show host replied that Nintendo did not contact them with any information about it. Keighley had to explain that announcements and schedules are determined by the developers and companies, not him and his staff.
"That’s not really a question I can answer, I don’t make the games or set up the schedule of announcements. Just because something happened, last year doesn’t mean it’s happening this year. It would have been cool for sure!" said Keighley.
Fans had a couple of reasons to expect a reveal, though. Besides the usual rumors, there was the timing and the presence of the former president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, Reggie fils-Aime. Persona 5's Joker was revealed at last year's edition of The Game Awards, so fans had just assumed it had become a tradition.
The character reveal will most likely take place in January via a Nintendo Direct, followed by a deep dive with series creator and director, Masahiro Sakurai. The Keef Crew tried to lighten the mood with this funny skit about the whole affair.
Several big announcements were made during The Game Awards 2019, but not the one Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans wanted to hear.
