Australian venue company Fortress Esports has announced plans for its flagship gaming and esports development project. It will be situated in the luxury shopping complex Emporium Melbourne.
Fortress Melbourne will take up over 2,700 square meters across two floors and will include streaming areas, gaming areas and a 200-seat esports arena. Fortress Esports hopes to take advantage of the growing popularity of esports in Australia.
“We’re excited to be opening our first flagship venue in Melbourne, and offer Australians a video gaming entertainment space that they can enjoy all year round," said Fortress Esports chief executive John Satterley. "We want to make Fortress Melbourne the ultimate ‘home away from home’ for everyone from casual gamers, competitive gamers, and esports fanatics, to families and after-work crowds.”
Bear in mind this announcement comes after media company Here, There & Everywhere called Australia an unsustainable market for esports. The statement was made after its esports division Gfinity made a loss of $5.3 million as of June 30 this year from its custom-built esports arena. It was the first esports arena ever constructed in Australia.
Yet, the Melbourne Esports Open 2019 just recently concluded to much fanfare. Hosted in Melbourne’s Olympic Park, the event organizers claim over 17,000 gaming and esports fans attended the event. The Oceanic Pro League finals and Overwatch Contenders Australia were held at Rod Laver Arena. Even new titles like Borderlands 3 and Fifa 20 were present at the event.
Based on MEO 2019's numbers, esports and gaming do look like it has a strong future in Australia. However, the question is can Melbourne sustain a purpose-built esports and gaming arena like the one Fortress Esports proposes or is it still too soon? Only time will tell.
