The coronavirus pandemic has a lot of the world's population engaging in social distancing, which has led to the cancelation of events and closing of business that had groups of people coming together.
For the FGC, that means having to play their favorite games online, which brings in a lot of factors like lousy internet connections and ping. A couple of pros have begun to drop Wi-Fi tier lists to help share their insight on which picks are the best for online play.
Popular Super Smash Bros. player Eric "ESAM" Lew joins the list of pros to release a Wi-Fi tier list for Smash Ultimate; however, it's only partially arranged by viability. His list mainly categorizes characters based on their speed and zoning tools. Fast characters like Sonic the Hedgehog and Zero Suit Samus sit right at the top because of how quickly they can act and how much longer it would take opponents to react during lag.

Projectile characters like Samus and Inkling also found their way into Top Tier, thanks to the opponent's inability to accurately track or time bombs and shots due to things like latency. Pikachu still managed to maintain a top position though. There's a reason why online play has led to a lot of rage quits, but it would appear that ESAM's main is impervious to all that.
Little Mac finally makes it out of the bottom to sit in Mid Tier, while characters usually considered better than him like Olimar, Marth, and Jigglypuff are around the bottom. The results show just how much of a difference there is between online and offline play.
One good way of improving your online experience, especially for fighting games, is to forgo Wi-Fi altogether and use ethernet cables via an adapter. Also, make sure that you're using the right cable for your internet connection. It won't solve all your problems, but it will make things a lot more bearable for all parties involved.
