One of the Epic Games employees, Colin Fogle, published a topic on Reddit, in which he spoke about the company's plans for the competitive component of the game. According to him, very soon a new in-game tournament system will appear in Fortnite with leaderboards that will be updated in real time.
“During January we’ll be transitioning to a new tournament backend system which will help enable features such as live in-game leaderboards during events, support for tournaments to take place across multiple knockout rounds, and allow us to create a richer variety of events to keep the experience fresh and exciting.”
Epic's esports manager also added that due to the upcoming changes, the number of in-game tournaments in January would decrease, but after the introduction of the new tournament system and the correction of most of the bugs, everything will return to normal. He did not name specific dates.
Epic Games also hosted the Winter Royale tournament in November and December, using the in-game tournament tab. The event, which was attended by European and North American competitors, was marked by a collective prize of $ 1 million. Winter Royale was Epic's first major event, organized using the in-game system, a feature introduced in October. Probably, the Fortnite World Cup qualifiers will begin in the next few months, and it seems that Epic Games is trying to improve the event tab to cope with the qualification process.
