When it was announced on Shenmue 3's Kickstarter page that the game would be delayed yet again, fans were disappointed, but not nearly as much as they are now.
During E3's PC Gaming Show, it was announced that the game's PC version would now be an Epic Games store exclusive. An announcement was also made on Shenmue 3's Kickstarter page.
Many gamers who chose to own the Steam version have now taken to the game's Kickstarter and Steam pages to lay complaints. Some others have gone even further to demand a refund.
The uproar stems mostly from the manner in which this change was made without warning. Similar circumstances occurred with Metro Exodus and many Steam players have long since decided to boycott the Epic Games store completely.
In reply to these requests, many backers received the same email.
"Hello [Backer],
Thank you very much for contacting us.
The launch was previously planned for distribution on Steam, however it was decided together with Deep silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.
Shenmue III will be distributed through the Epic Games Store and will require the Epic Games Store Client to activate.
We apologize for the sudden change in platform, however, refunds will not be granted for this change.
We thank you for your support and look forward to delivering the Shenmue experience fans everywhere have been waiting so long for.
Best Regards,
The Shenmue III Team"
This has simply made relations worse with gamers rallying to vent on Reddit. Some have even threatened legal action but it remains to be seen how things will play out.
